Head Injuries

The number of people who sustain head injuries in the United States is staggering. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1.4 million Americans sustain traumatic brain injury, and 50,000 die. Currently about 5.3 million people in the U.S. require long-term help in performing daily activities as a result of traumatic brain injury.

There are two types of traumatic brain injury: open head injury, which occur when a foreign object penetrates the skull; and closed head injury, in which a blow to the head results in injury to the brain but does not fracture the skull.

Some of the common causes of traumatic brain injury are:

  • Auto accidents
  • Motorcycle accidents
  • Tractor-trailer accidents
  • Diving accidents
  • Falls
  • Workplace accidents
  • Medical malpractice
  • Accidents involving all-terrain vehicles
  • Defective products

The symptoms of a traumatic brain injury generally fall into four broad categories:

  • Thinking: changes related to memory and reasoning
  • Sensory: changes related to sight, smell, taste and touch
  • Language: changes related to the ability to talk, write and comprehend
  • Emotion: the onset of depression, anxiety, aggression and personality changes

When serious and permanent brain damage is the result of another person's carelessness, the victim may be entitled to compensation for past and future medical expenses, past and future wages, pain and suffering, disability and other damages.
